Charles G. Barley Memorial Organ

Memorial Coliseum

Marion, IN

(played by Dr. Fred B. Binckes, FAGO)

(Note:  The renovation of the Barley Memorial Organ, Estey Opus 2727, was my first project, done over thirty years ago, while I was a student at Ball State University.  Since that time, the organ has remained playable until recently.  Presently, the building is under renovation, slated to become the Marion Family YMCA.   The organ is to be disconnected and stored in the building until funding can be found to completely rebuild it.  Although we did not create its sound, it is an impressive instrument, worth preserving, and we share some of Fred Binckes' 1976 recital here, in honor of this fine municipal pipe organ.)

Fanfare in D       Jacques Lemmens
Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring   J.S. Bach

The Old Centrum

Central Avenue Methodist Church

Indianapolis, IN

(played by Dr. Charles Manning)

(Note:  The Central Avenue organ was built in 1892 by a fine, but nearly forgotten Indianapolis organ builder, Thomas Prentiss Sanborn.  The organ had not been playable for over a decade, and had been in deteriorating condition for many years before that.  Reynolds Associates "resuscitated" this magnificent II manual, 33 rank instrument so it could be heard in the 2007 national convention of the Organ Historical Society, which was held in Indianapolis.  These recordings, made live during the convention's visit to this historic organ, reveal a masterpiece of nineteenth century organ building, which will hopefully be restored and preserved for the future.  At the time of these recordings, the organ was still in unrestored condition, and is heard here "warts and all."  Our thanks to Dr. Manning for his musicianship and his courage.)
