Michael Pettry, who has been Organist and Director of Music at PUMC for nearly a decade, provided many opportunities to educate and build enthusiasm.  One of these included a "petting zoo," in which church members could touch and handle pipes and materials from the organ.  The organ committee also visited many organs by various builders before finally deciding on Reynolds Associates.

Once this decision had been made, we began preparing ideas to present to the committee, with the knowledgable assistance of Martin Ellis, who had been hired by PUMC as a consultant.  Organist, consultant, and builder all concurred that, while the new organ needs a well-defined, classic ensemble structure, it also needs much greater musical flexibility than was available from the old organ.  So, the new organ will have a specification that will be something of a departure from the usual, particularly in the availablity of flutes, strings, and reeds individually selectable at different pitches.  This is not "borrowing" or "unitization" in the usual sense, but could instead be thought of as "selective coupling."

An exciting aspect to this new organ is the incorporation of several vintage ranks of pipes, completely restored, from a 1927 Estey pipe organ.  These pipes will give the organ the ability to have warm, Romantic tone colors that will be distinctive and useful in worship.  For reasons of space, we will also incorporate a few digitally generated stops to fill out the stoplist.  These stops will be custom-designed and voiced for this pipe organ.

We expect to complete the new organ in Plainfield late in 2015.  View the specification of the new organ HERE.
